Symbolic Topographies
My travels between Australia and Mexico produced a body of work called"Symbolic Topographies"in which I developed a kind of personal iconography based on Mexican themes in combination with a response to the traditions in Indigenous Australian Art of reading narrative through topographical representations. My recent prints explore these experiences by investigating the emotive power of movement and the way in which symbols can be used to generate both personal and social narratives. The prints depict place through topographic representations which also attempt to symbolize and evoke the emotional state of mind involved in the process of making. these responses to place and process create their own rhythm resulting in a meditative conclusion.
I found that the simplicity of carving into linoleum reflects my responses and moves closest to what I want the observer to experience- movement and rhythm with a symbolic narrative tranquility and strength.
